After a devastating house fire, former students, colleagues, friends, and family are coming together to help Mrs. Hartmann rebuild the home she lost—and support someone who has spent a lifetime supporting others.
Her Story
For nearly three decades, Irene Hartmann taught English and journalism at Toms River High School East. As a teacher and chess coach, she helped generations of students strengthen their writing, sharpen their thinking, and develop confidence both inside and outside the classroom.After retiring from full-time public-school teaching, she continued educating others as an adjunct professor at Ocean County College. Her courses have ranged from English composition and grammar to world literature and Shakespeare—extending a lifetime of teaching, tutoring, and mentoring students of all ages.Mrs. Hartmann has spent much of her life helping others build their knowledge, confidence, and futures. Following the devastating fire that damaged her longtime home, her former students, colleagues, friends, and family now have an opportunity to help her rebuild.
The Fire
On the morning of October 18, 2024, an accidental electrical fire broke out in the first-floor sunroom of Mrs. Hartmann’s longtime home in downtown Toms River. Heavy smoke and flames prompted a two-alarm response from fire companies across the township. Both escaped safely, and no residents, pets, firefighters, or other first responders were injured. Shore News NetworkAlthough their lives were spared, the home suffered extensive fire, smoke, and water damage and was declared unsafe to occupy. The fire ended in a matter of hours, but recovering and rebuilding the home—and restoring the life built within it—has become a much longer journey.
The Rebuild Journey
Even before the fire, Mrs. Hartmann’s insurance coverage had become unusually complicated. Her policy was cancelled and rewritten several times during 2023 and again in 2024, ultimately carrying a stated coverage limit of $385,000. After the fire, difficulties communicating with the insurer and an initially retained public adjuster created further delays. The family eventually changed representation and succeeded in having the policy reinstated in March 2025.Since then, the family has worked steadily to document what rebuilding will actually require. Multiple full construction estimates were obtained, along with independent estimates for windows, demolition and debris removal, heating and cooling, and electrical work. These materials were provided through the appraisal process so the loss could be evaluated using detailed, locally grounded costs.The journey has involved setbacks, disputes, and far more time than anyone expected—but it has also brought continued progress. The family remains focused on resolving the remaining issues, beginning construction, and returning Mrs. Hartmann to a safe and familiar home.
